Fungi are very important in decay, breaking down and releasing the complicated organic chemicals locked in dead bodies back into the mineral cycles. The fungi do this because they gain energy from the decomposition, in the same way as we gain energy from respiring sugars from cornflakes, but their decomposition has the useful ecological consequence of recycling many essential chemicals. Fungi cannot convert carbon dioxide back into glucose - they are not plants.
